First time use of video in dutch civil case
July 3, 2006

The court of Arnhem used a video connection to hear a witness from Canada in a Dutch civil case. The in this case important witness, a Dutch expert living in Canada, did not need to come to the Netherlands for the hearing session. A half hour video meeting with the judge Jos Roovers and the legal council of the parties involved was sufficient. Everybody was unanimous about the results; "Excellent quality of this video connection, very pleasant to work in this way, this definitively has future!"

The ICTRO (ICT organization of the Dutch courts) organized this session with their own equipment. They used the Eye Catcher, a portable video unit specifically fit for this purpose as it provides true eye contact between the participants thanks to a smart autocue system. On a second screen the clerk of the court and others could follow the session as well.
